Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty
The diverse and vibrant landscape of the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Beauty stretches along the Thames escarpment of the North Downs on the eastern side of Gravesham. It forms a section of the AONB that extends across Kent from its Surrey border following the North Downs to Canterbury and on to Dover.
Comprising the dramatic chalk escarpments to the south of Vigo and the secluded dry valleys, networks of lanes, historic hedgerows, ancient woodlands and traditional orchards of Meopham, Cobham and Luddesdown, the AONB comprises locally distinctive villages, unique and precious wildlife and sites of historic and cultural interest. All these contribute to a landscape that is a valuable national asset which was designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in 1968.
